Girls In Society

I feel it’s important before I post this that I address the issue of why it’s taken me two months to post on the WYO blog- essentially, I wrote the post, and then couldn’t format it, and then it was Christmas, and now we’re here. My sincerest apologies.

We live in a society where girls are brought up to be scared, rather than taught to stand up for themselves and what they believe in.

I’m not saying boys aren’t, but I suppose the focus of this post is to highlight issues that, as a teenage girl, I feel are unfair. I’m sure I will, at some stage, post about boys’ issues and the issues relating to teenage boys, but, for now, we have this.

First of all, I think it’s important to address the elephant in the room- I am absolutely terrified, a lot of the time. If I have to walk anywhere alone in the middle of the day, I’m terrified. I don’t walk anywhere alone at night. I don’t walk alone at night with my friends, unless it’s to a car to be picked up.

I know I’m not the only person seeing this and sensing this, so I guess I just want to know why.

I know I’m scared that I’ll be kidnapped, or worse, and I know I’m scared of that because I am in the biggest percentage of people that have these crimes committed to them.

But when did this become a ‘normal’ part of society? When did a girl becoming kidnapped turn into ‘She shouldn’t have been walking alone at night.’

Why is there this huge mentality of ‘women should know better’?

I’m not saying women shouldn’t know better. I’m saying they shouldn’t have to.

I don’t think there’s been a single stage of history where women were free to do what they liked. And, yeah, I know all crime increases after daylight, and I know men are targeted for muggings and the like too, but, as I said, this focus is on women.

Back through the years, you can see women being controlled by their father, and then by their husbands. Society taught that men are better than women. It’s only in the past twenty or thirty years that this mindset has begun to change, and it’s not changing fast enough. This idea of ‘women should know better’ is outdated and hurtful.

I don’t want to live in a dream society. I want to live in a society where I can walk around confident in the knowledge that I am safe, and that I’ll be able to see my parents when I go home. I want to blog, confident in the knowledge that nobody is waiting for a slip up, some word that gives a hint to my location, my patterns, anything that could help them hurt me. I want to live in a society where I don’t feel the need to have a slip of paper over my webcam, in case I have some virus allowing someone to see me as I sit in front of my laptop.

That, to me, is not a dream society. That is a fair society where everyone is treated with respect and nobody is a target.

This is my first post on here and I’m unbelievably nervous about posting it, so be sure to leave feedback for me to improve in future. You can find my blog on https://teaandshamrocks.wordpress.com/.
