You are individual. You are beautiful. You are you.

Approximately two thirds of teenagers are uncomfortable in their own skin, their own skin which they have to live in for, at this rate, nearly a century. It’s hardly fair therefore that young people today are made to feel unloved and alienated because of what makes them unique. You have purple hair. So what? You like comic books. So what? You study hard. So what? You don’t like talking to people. SO WHAT? Think about what makes you unique. Now think about if someone made you feel unworthy because of that.

I’m seen as the mum of my group of friends, constantly worrying each person is okay and making sure they’re taking care of themselves, even if that means grilling them for not eating three square meals a day. But if I’ve learnt something, it’s that people, particularly people our age, love to feel wanted and special. We crave affection, because at the end of the day, puberty is a messed up process and we all need a helping hand through that, even if it’s just a good morning message every day from a friend saying that they wish you a great day.

Look at the sky. As I’m writing this, it’s the perfect shade of blue with wispy white clouds drifting through. It’s a funny metaphor, but the sky is you. You have days where you feel warm and sunny, but then there are other days where you feel cold and stormy. And that’s okay. What you have to remember is that at the end of the storm, when the sun comes out and you’re feeling good again, there’s always a rainbow. You don’t have to be comfortable in your own skin 100% of the time, because that’s insane, but if you focus on the light at the end of the tunnel, eventually you will feel good with whom you are and that’s all that matters in this world because you are kind and beautiful.

I know for some people this is hard to believe (don’t worry if this is hard to believe, sometimes I don’t even believe it myself), but there are always, always people out there who you mean a lot to. Even if sometimes you feel so isolated and you feel that everything you do is so wrong, someone cares. I care, your family care, your friends care, and most importantly, you should care.

We all go through bad stages in life. You may feel like you’re the only one. But you’re not. Someone out there feels the same way you do. You feel down in the dumps, like there is no escape, but you exist for a reason, even if that reason was because so many years ago, you were the winning sperm. So, laugh, smile, and dance like nobody is watching, because when it comes down to it, you are not just unique. You are significant.
